In Memoriam: Elliot Lippin
It is our sad duty to report the passing of Elliot Lippin, President of Camp Sussex from 1974-1983 at the age of 79. Elliot was a giant. He spearheaded the movement to bring alumni and younger people on the board and into the camp leadership.
He grew up Bensonhurst JCH, along with Al Kaplan, Irwin Friedman, Murray Lederman and his brother Howard. Elliot’s humble roots, through his many years as a Sussex camper, led to a great understanding of children in need
In his years in the fur industry, Elliot turned to philanthropy. He became the youngest member of the board and its youngest chairman. His mentors included the late Abe Lillienthal, Nat Jackson and Judge Benjamin Shalleck. all of whom saw great potential in this modest man from Bensonhurst.
In the late 80’s, he organized a movement to bring children with AIDS to Camp Sussex for a short sojourn over two years; a program that was showcased on 60 Minutes years later This caused great controversy as comparatively little was known about the disease. But Elliot was more of a pioneer than a politician. He understood where there was a need and sought to address it aggressively.
In recent days, he expressed great optimism about the future of the Camp - even though he did not expect to see it come to fruition. Our thoughts are with his wife Shelly, brother Howard and sister Frieda Karp, son Sam, daughters Naomi and Paula and grandchildren.
