February 2006
Dear Friends of Camp Sussex:
Over the course of time, Camp Sussex, like many charitable organizations, has found it more and more difficult to raise the funds necessary to sustain operations. In recent years the Camp has be unable to attract sufficient private donations to fill the void left by evaporating governmental funds. To make matters worse, the reduction in governmental support for charitable organizations has created additional competition among such organizations for private donations.
For several years now the Camp has been operating at a significant deficit, which it can no longer afford to do. In order to stretch whatever funds were available to provide our services to children of need, the Camp has forsaken necessary capital improvements and renovations. This is a situation that the Camp can no longer ignore.
In order to attempt to bring the Camp back to a positive financial position, some very difficult decisions needed to be made. Consequently, the Board of Directors has voted to temporarily suspend camp sessions starting with the 2006 camp season. This decision was not reached lightly.
While camp sessions are suspended, the Board intends to engage in various fundraising activities, including rental opportunities for the property, in order to raise the funds necessary to restore the Camp’s financial health. After more than 80 years of continuous operations, suspending camp even for one season is very difficult. However, the Board has every expectation that this suspension of operations will be temporary and, if fundraising initiatives are successful, to resume camp operations for the summer of 2008.
The future existence of Camp Sussex depends on all who care for Camp to make this transition period a success. If you believe that the mission of Camp Sussex is still as vital today as it was in the past, and if would like to see the Camp re-open as soon as possible, I ask that you please give generously.
Parents who were intending to send their children to Sussex in 2006 should contact either the office at (718) 261-8700 x 13 or the American Camping Association at (212) 391-5207.
We look forward to providing you with periodic updates of our progress as well as invitations to important events that we will be holding in the coming year.
Sincerely,
Richard G. Schwartz
Board President
