Mission Statement
Since 1923, Camp Sussex has transformed the lives of children by providing the opportunity for children of limited financial means to leave the city during the summer to experience a traditional residential summer camp environment. Located in the lush mountains of northwest New Jersey, Camp Sussex helps children gain interpersonal social skills such as tolerance, cooperation, and self-reliance as they explore their creativity in the Camp’s safe and nurturing environment. Camp Sussex’s consistent commitment to creating an atmosphere of positive encouragement and personal attention has inspired a climate of loyalty among generations of Camp Sussex campers and staff, motivating those touched by the Camp to stay involved and give back to campers of the present day.
Accomodations
Located 65 miles from New York City in scenic northwestern New Jersey, Camp Sussex spreads out over 120 acres and fronts on a natural spring-fed lake. The grounds are constantly and carefully maintained. Every modern cabin accommodates up to 10 campers and three staff members.

Campers participate in a wide variety of activities including swimming, boating, dramatics, dancing, arts and crafts, tennis, nature study and basketball. Recently, an indoor gymnasium was built as well as an outdoor hockey rink.

Facilities
The professionally run kitchen is a source of great pride for the camp. Hearty, nutritious, kosher-style meals are served, all prepared with care. An on-site, fully-equipped infirmary with qualified personnel provides campers with complete medical care. Laundry facilities are on the premises as well, and much of the clothing, including blankets and linens, is provided at no charge.
Spirits and Tradition
We foster a warm family spirit and offer children an opportunity to live with others from varied backgrounds. A staff of qualified individuals from colleges and universities across the country and from abroad perform with dedication and enthusiasm. Many of the counselors are former campers who aim to ensure the same healthy, rewarding summers that they experienced in years past. We proudly offer a unique college sponsorship program to former campers who become counselors. This has enriched the Sussex tradition of commitment to molding individuals from early childhood to adulthood.

The opportunity for so many children to enjoy a summer vacation in serene country surroundings is what has sustained Camp Sussex all these years. The camp is operated by a small independent group of dedicated people and exists largely on charitable contributions.

One of the most tangible examples of how Camp Sussex affects those who spend time there has been the formation of an alumni organization consisting of former campers and staff members. These individuals strongly believe in the ideals of Sussex and have kept close ties for many years. They meet regularly and are instrumental in fund-raising and leadership programs.

We have had a long history of helping youngsters become important and caring adults. This philosophy has resulted in a successful tradition that has grown and developed since the days following the First World War, and continues to provide opportunities for hundreds of youngsters every summer.
